Why Rocketship Education Depends On Strong Parent Involvement

Rocketship Education is a collection of charter schools that is headquartered in San Jose, California. At their school’s parents are heavily involved in the school operations. This can even include parents being involved in the job interviews that prospective teachers go through, such as their new school in Washington D.C. So far this company operates 25 schools around the United States.

Rocketship Education was co-founded by Preston Smith who also serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. It was established in 2007 with its first school located in San Jose. Their schools emphasize a blended-learning style that can be personalized to fit each student’s individual needs. Additionally, parent participation is one of the core values which results in better student achievement.

In order to participate in job interviews, parents are provided training including how to conduct a panel review. Another way to participate is at community meetings where the teachers who are job finalists are there to meet and greet the parents. Some teacher’s do decide this level of parental involvement isn’t for them but others find it a perfect fit.

At Rocketship Education schools, students are taught through a mix of traditional teaching paired with online instruction. This reliance on technology not only helps students succeed but it also helps to keep costs down. This blend of teaching styles has resulted in improved test scores as compared with public schools.

Rocketship Education provides an educational opportunity to those in pre-school through 4th grade. While the parents are involved with a Rocketship school they learn how to be a strong advocate for their students, a skill that helps them when their children are attending middle and high schools later on.

As a non-profit organization, Rocketship Education has helped many children learn who come from low-income families. They have also been successful teaching English language learners who have the additional challenge of learning a new language. This is achieved through a balanced approach of highly qualified teachers as well as parents who are deeply committed to their children’s educational outcomes. Some of the parents didn’t graduate from high school themselves and want better opportunities for their children.
